Wolf Hall filming locations around England
Montacute House This Elizabethan mansion in an eponymous village in Somerset represents Greenwich Palace, Henry VIII\'s main London seat and the site of Anne Boleyn\'s arrest in Wolf Hall. The National Trust property has been used for filming in the past - for The Libertine and Sense and Sensibility - and makes an attractive backdrop for jousting scenes in the new drama. The opening hours of National Trust properties vary throughout the year, so do check the webpage for each specific property before you plan to visit. For Montacute House, visit: nationaltrust.org.uk/montacute-house Telegraph readers are being offered the chance to visit Tudor England with Dr Susannah Lipscomb, who will be joining a three-night tour around locations in which Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn\'s romance was played out. The three-night tour takes in Eltham Palace, Allington Castle and Hampton Court. See travelshop.telegraph.co.uk/collection/the-fatal-courtship for more information. See our guide to the best Tudor attractions in England for more on the superb heritage of the age. -- Wolf Hall, episode one: review
Barrington Court Also in Somerset, this expansive Tudor manor was restored by the Lyle family in the 1920s, and in Wolf Hall represents York Place/Whitehall, the home of Cardinal Wolsey. 01460 241938; nationaltrust.org.uk/barrington-court Read more: Somerset hotels
Lacock Abbey Wolf Hall itself is in real life Lacock Abbey, in Wiltshire, which was sold to Sir William Sharington, one of his courtiers, following the dissolution of the monasteries. This new serialisation won\'t be the first time Lacock Abbey has appeared on the big and small screens: it has been used to shoot Cranford, Harry Potter and The Other Boleyn Girl 01249 730459; nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock Read more: Wiltshire hotels
Chastleton House This property in Oxfordshire is, according to the National Trust, an "exceptionally well-preserved time capsule", as the original wealthy owner\'s descendants lost their wealth and could not afford its upkeep. In Wolf Hall, its small stone courtyard is the location for dramatic scenes from Cromwell\'s childhood in Putney (01494 755560; nationaltrust.org.uk/chastleton-house ). Read more: Oxfordshire hotels
This is an image of Charleston House during the filming of Wolf Hall. The interior of the property was used to depict Wolf Hall itself, the seat of the Seymour family.
Great Chalfield Manor and garden, Wiltshire This moated house in Wiltshire is Austin Friars in Wolf Hall, the home of Thomas Cromwell. It has been regularly used for filming in the past, appearing in Lark Rise to Candleford, The Other Boleyn Girl, and Tess of the D\'Urbervilles. It is currently inhabited by Robert and Patsy Floyd, who manage the house, gardens and farm for the National Trust, and open the manor and gardens to the public from spring to autumn (01225 782239; nationaltrust.org.uk/great-chalfield-manor )
Other filming locations included Winchester Cathedral (01962 857200; winchester-cathedral.org.uk ), which has a whole history\'s worth of royal connections - it was built by William the Conqueror, King Cnut\'s bones are believed to lie in a mortuary chest inside, and Mary Tudor was married to Philip of Spain here.
Scenes were also shot at Gloucester Cathedral (01452 528095; gloucestercathedral.org.uk ), mostly in the Cloister Garth and the Nave. The edifice is nearly 1,000 years old and contains beautiful examples of stained glass.
Bristol Cathedral (0117 926 4879; bristol-cathedral.co.uk ) was also used to shoot scenes in Wolf Hall. Founded in 1140, the cathedral is architecturally beautiful - on a less ecclesiastical note, it was used as the college of the characters in the teenage TV drama Skins.
