With the exception of pony rides and those sit and ride trail rides, I believe riding is for sure a sport. Horses aren't going to read their riders mind automatically, a serious rider has to give cues and sometimes really show their partner what they'd like. Especially with dressage, eventing and jumping. A horse isn't going to do these things without a confident and ACTIVE rider.

The rider doesn't just sit there and let the horse do all the work. It's a team sport, where the horse and rider work together. Anyone who's ridden a horse knows that there's more to it physically and mentally than just sitting there. And there's a vast variety of recognized 'horse back riding' sports. Dressage, jumping, racing, calf-roping, barrel racing, polo etc.

Actually, the rider does do a lot of work, but I think it's the horse who does most of it.
