“What’s wrong?” Steven asked the moment Hugh opened the door and startled him. If there was someone to know him as well as he himself hid, или even еще – it was Steven.
“Nothing… What do Ты mean?” Hugh lied and of course, failed to deceive his best friend.
“Fight with Lisa?” Steven gave Hugh a quizzical look as they headed to the back yard.
Maybe Hugh should say yes. Get Steven out of his hair. However, he would know if he was lying, so Hugh chose to stay silent.
They seated themselves around the garden table.
“Hugh, Ты can’t fool me… What happened?” Steve bugged him again. Hugh thought about his question. ‘What happened?’. A lot of things happened… Some amazing and weird things, one that hurt him, but he would never admit.
Just then Estelle appeared with a tray. She put two cups of чай in front of them and excused herself.
“So?” Steve was persistent; Hugh knew he had to tell him something.
“Ok already…” Hugh sort of gave in “We… kind of had a fight last night” he took a sip from his cup.
“Bedroom problems? What did Ты do?” Steve’s eyes sparkled.
“Steven, just because your character is psychologist, doesn’t mean Ты are” Hugh laughed a little.
“I can say I’ve been yours for quite a while. Now, tell me” he smirked.
There was a creepy silence for a минута или two, nothing but the sound of the pool water stroked by wind filling the yard.
“I was tired… and she… wasn’t” Hugh had no idea how to talk about this subject with his best friend. Sure, they talked about everything, but this was… different.
“Are Ты serious?” Steve’s voice echoed just like the little voice Hugh heard the night before, when he’d pushed Lisa from him.
Hugh nodded a little.
“Hugh… come on! Talk to me! Ты never had this problem before..” Steven took a sip as well “Good as always” he made a small comment
“Yeah, isn’t it” Hugh approved
“Enough with the tea… Tell me!” he gave Hugh ‘the look’. The one that сказал(-а) ‘you’re not getting away with this’.
“I was just, tired” Hugh found a way to escape that look. He felt wrong for lying to his best friend.
“You’re never tired! Ты come Главная from the set tired as never and Ты can still satisfy your wife every time, so what’s wrong?” Steve made Hugh look up. How did he even talk about that with Steve? He would lie if he weren’t a bit proud he did, though.
However, Hugh being unable to tell him what he really needed to, made Hugh really uneasy.
“What do Ты want to hear?” Hugh snapped. He was desperate. “That I wake up one morning with Lisa as my wife and Elyon and Nick as our kids and I have no idea how it happened?”
Steven didn’t take him seriously, unsurprisingly.
“Just because your character is sarcastic, doesn’t mean Ты are” Steven gave him ‘the look’ again.
“So… Come on, back to the problem” Steve сказал(-а) in his ‘Sherlock Holmes’ tone.
Hugh couldn’t say a word. He actually сказал(-а) what he wanted to say and it made no difference. He didn’t mean to Steve, he meant to himself. He realized that wasn’t what had been bothering him since he woke up. What was it then?
“Hugh, Ты know what this reminds me of?” Hugh looked up at his friend’s words.
“The time Ты had come to me and didn’t know how to tell me Ты got Lisa pregnant and that she didn’t want to hear a word about Ты divorcing Jo. Ты were doomed, she didn’t want Ты to risk your family for her.”
That was intriguing… Lisa was so unselfish.
“What about that?” Maybe Steve could tell him еще about it.
“Even then, Hugh, even when Ты found yourself in a position where Ты could lose both Lisa and your unborn kid, Ты found a way to share it with me. Just like Ты will now” Steve grinned victoriously, and Hugh hated to admit he was right.
“There’s nothing to be shared.” He lied again, but that was his only option.
The thing he didn’t detect still bugged him. Damn, what was it?
Steve looked around the yard for a few seconds, then his eyes shot up at Hugh.
“Are Ты having an affair?” Steve caught Hugh of guard. What startled Hugh еще was how Steven asked it as if it were the most usual thing.
“What? No!!!” Hugh would never cheat on Lisa, he was positive. But he did say that about Jo and he cheated on her once… well, with Lisa, twice.
He felt guilty and ashamed. What else could Steve make off of this all?
“What’s wrong then?” His friend knew Hugh wasn’t lying about that one.
“I don’t know” Hugh really didn’t, he tried to realize something “ I wanted to talk to her…” there “Just talked to her, and she turned her back on me” he found it, finally.
“I see… was there something else? Why did Ты want to talk to her in the first place?” Steve seemed confused. Hugh thought about what he asked him. He wanted to talk to her about anything. He wanted to believe there was something else to their marriage besides raising kids and sex. And… Hugh still didn’t want to admit it, but… he now knew that the fact she didn’t reply him when he told her he Любовь her, hurt him.
That was why his сердце ached from the start.
“I told her… I loved her last night…” he took a sip of his чай again, not bothering to say еще about it.
“So? You’ve told her that before” Steve took a sip as well.
“She replied with ‘see Ты tomorrow’” Hugh felt a lump in his throat.
“Oh, that’s not pleasant” Steve seemed to start understanding.
“I just… Hate to think there is nothing but sex and kids in our marriage. Let’s face it… Sex will… subside and kids will grow up. What will it be there for us then?” Hugh felt weird about it. Unwrapping the smallest things that bothered him and realizing they weren’t that small, was unusual experience.
“I think that has been your problem ever since Ты got together. It started only with sex, then Ты left Jo and Ты just got with Lisa Ты never discussed it, then Ты got a kid and then another one… Ты never really talked about things, they just happened. Ты weren’t looking for talk back then, and now, as you’ve gotten older you’re beginning to realize Ты missed on that.” Steve paused to take yet another sip of tea.
“Let me ask Ты one thing. IF Ты could go back in time, knowing where you’d be now, would Ты change anything?”
Steven’s Вопрос was meant to throw him, and it did, just not in the ways Steven would imagine. ‘If Ты could go back in time’ Hugh wasn’t sure in which time he was.
“I would…” he thought about it… He would want to be a better man “ I would maybe divorce Jo before I got with Lisa… and I’d talk about everything with Lisa more. Other things, I wouldn’t ever change. Though, if I did change anything, that would probably mean I wouldn’t have my kids… and I’m not sure I would sacrifice them for some talk”
It wasn’t easy thinking about it.
“It’s late to change anything, but Ты could start talking to Lisa, it’s not late. Think about it” Steve finished his чай and placed the empty cup back on the table.
“That’s what I was trying to do… But she seems not to be into it…” Hugh sighed.
“Maybe Ты weren’t trying hard enough”
Steven’s words kept ringing in Hugh’s head for a long time.


My chapters have become so long lately!!!
Did Ты know I already wrote еще pages than Max in total? Seriously XD
