What is meant by "East End" and "West End"? Is there an implicit social as well as geographical difference?

The East End is one of the poorer areas of London; this is where the Docklands, Spitalfields, and Brick Lane are located. Many immigrants live here, and therefore it is very culturally diverse. However, the East End has become much еще industrially developed in Последнее years, especially Canary Wharf. Apparently, this is where the 2012 Olympics will be held.

The West End is located in Central London. Many museums, government buildings, tourist attractions, universities, and theatres are located here (note that the phrase "West End" can also refer to the theatre district). The West End includes the districts of Knightsbridge (home to Harrod's), South Kensington, and Chelsea (among others), all three of which are pretty upscale.
