How do Ты start up a conversation?

oh it depends who i talk to...
if its a friend i usually start by asking how's it going или look at his face reaction
and if he или she looks upset i ask whats wrong / is there something bothering Ты first
also i usually focus on the person interests
to keep the conversation going

Usually I start with "So how was your day?" that would probably lead to what he или she is doing, so we may talk about what we like to do and so on, but if I'm talk with someone I already know; like you, it would be random. :)

Usually, I make a stupid joke, and the subject somehow trails off into something relevant to the universe. Very rarely do I intentionally start a serious conversation.
