They've been the most infamous "on again, off again" couple for as long as we can remember, but when this duo aren't yo-yo dating, they're writing songs. Whilst he's not confirmed that 'What Do You Mean?' is actually about his ex, the music videos DOES include his former bae's name. After splitting from Olivia Culpo earlier this year, hunky Nick Jonas was spotted to be getting close to ANOTHER ex - Selena Gomez - at this year's MTV VMAs. Just days later, Nick posted an unfinished track on his Soundcloud, apparently referencing Selena's latest hit 'Good For You'/ With lyrics like "You say I never been good for you/You can't deny I gave it good to you", we're CONVINCED it's about her! At last!! A song that wasn't written about an ex, a break-up or some serious beef! Ells has dedicated a track on her upcoming album to her hunky beau, Dougie Poynter. “I’m really curious about him. Taylor's the queen of writing songs about people, and 'Bad Blood' was written about her former friend Katy Perry who reportedly poached some of her tour dancers. Katy took to Twitter after the song broke to tweet, 'Beware the Regina George in sheep's clothing'. Ouch!

Ed's emotional 'Don't' was said to have been written about Ellie Goulding after rumours surfaced that she had cheated on him with his pal Niall Horan. Awk!

7. Selena Gomez - 'Heart Wants What It Wants'

Selena's heartfelt ballad was written about her on-off relationship with Justin, and the battle between the 'million reasons why I should give you up, but the hurt wants what it wants'. Selena put on an emotional performance of the song at the American Music Awards where she performed in tears.

8. Taylor Swift - 'We Are Never Getting Back Together', 'Style'

Taylor's hit song 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' was rumoured to have been written about a certain Mr Harry Styles following their break up, and one of her new songs, 'Style' from her new album '1989' is also rumoured to be about the 1D heart throb. With lyrics like, 'You got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt' we can see a lot of resemblance to Hazza...

Justin's smash hit song 'Cry Me A River' was widely acknowledged to have been inspired by his relationship with Britney Spears and rumours that she had cheated on him. The accompanying video also featured an actress who bore more than a passing resemblance to Ms Spears…

'Everytime' was Britney's response song to Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me A River', featuring lyrics like 'I may have made it rain, please forgive me. My weakness caused you pain, and this song is my sorry', relating to the video and lyrics in Justin's song.

One of her more light-hearted songs, 'Me And Mr Jones' was written by Amy about rapper Nas. The song alludes to someone making her miss a Slick Rick The Ruler gig, but no-one will get between her and Mr Jones - Nas' real name being Nasir Jones. Seems like the song worked, as the pair became firm friends after he heard the track.

This one is pretty self-explanatory - Maroon 5 sang the praises of Rolling Stone Mick Jagger's snake hips in their huge hit song 'Moves Like Jagger'… and dance floors all over the country were soon flooded with people trying to emulate Mick's famous hip thrusts!

John Mayer's love song is one the pair performed together when they were an item. One messy break up later, Tay Tay looked super awkward when she appeared as a mentor on The Voice USA and a contestant sang it to her. Yikes.

'Bonnie And Clyde' was Beyonce and Jay Z's first ever collaboration together, and likened the pair to the legendary gangster couple, Bonnie and Clyde.

Nicki wrote 'Marilyn Monroe' about the legendary Hollywood actress, comparing her life in the spotlight to Marilyn's, with lyrics including, 'If you can’t handle my worst, You ain’t getting my best, Is this how Marilyn Monroe felt?'

Nick's emotional song 'Wedding Bells' was written about his ex, Miley Cyrus, telling him about her new engagement to Liam Hemsworth. The lyrics, 'She says, can you keep a secret, A ceremony set for June, I know it’s a rush but I just love him so much, I hope that you can meet him soon, No, I don’t wanna love if it’s not you, I don’t wanna hear the wedding bells bloom, Maybe we can try one last time, But I dont wanna hear the wedding bells chime' certainly seem to relate to their situation...

This Scissor Sisters track came about after Jake Shears had a dream about meeting the Beatles star and the pair talking about songwriting.

Taylor's first ever song was written about her impending split from her high school boyfriend Drew Dunlap when he left for college, and listed the things that wold remind the pair of their relationship. One of the things being the music of Tim McGraw, a country musician Taylor was listening to at the time.

Gwen's hit song 'Hollaback Girl' came about after Courtney Love slammed her as a 'cheerleader' in a magazine interview. Gwen hit back saying that she wasn't ever a cheerleader but that she would show Courtney exactly what she could do - and brought out one of 2005's most popular songs.

'Goodbye' was the Spice Girls first song following Geri Halliwell's departure from the band, and the lyrics were poignant to her no longer being in the group. 'Goodbye' also became the Spice Girl's third consecutive Christmas number one in 1998.

Jay Z's song 'Picasso Baby' alludes to the relationship between the world of hip hop and contemporary art and bringing these two worlds together.

Pharrell's ode to Marilyn Monroe also name drops several other famous female legends including Cleopatra and Joan of Arc. Proof that the legendary Hollywood actress is still a hot topic!

Although the actual song has little to do with the Western legend, the Gorillaz name checked the actor in the title. Damon Albarn, one of the writers behind the track said in 2001 that they hadn't heard from Clint about his response to the track but said, "I'm sure Clint Eastwood would like [the song]. He's an intelligent man."
