It depends on the stress involved. You could have stress by being homeless. In that situation the stress occurs because you don't have a place to stay, you may or may not be fighting for your life,worrying about food. And other messed up things to deal with while being homeless. It's hard to get rid of that stress without some assistance. And then there's other kinds of stress with you cannot get rid of so easily. It really depends.

My view is that you don't 'get rid' of stress, you manage it. Stress happens to everyone, usually every day, in varying degrees. It's up to you how you manage it. What do you do to counteract it? Do you take steps to change the situation that's causing your stress or do you endure? Do you vent or do you bury it?
Although BlindBandit has a point that some stressful situations cannot be overcome without help...in the end, it's up to you to seek help. Not only that, it's up to you to manage your stress until the situation is resolved [however that may happen]. Some people lash out when they are stressed, some people drink, some people smoke, some people eat too much, some people don't eat enough. All of these can be used as coping mechanisms for stress but none of them are healthy. It's up to you to find a healthy way to relieve your stress. Taking action to change your situation, engaging in hobbies that you enjoy, making sure that you eat right and get enough sleep are all healthy ways to manage stress.
