Prologue
I lay, dying, getting closer to death every tick of the clock. I was in pain. And then the shifts changed. I saw Carlisle come in. he talked to my mother, and then wheeled her away. When he came back, he had an expression of determination on his face. He took me away to. I knew where we were going-the morgue. Yet I was not dead. I tried to speak, but I could not. Something told me that something terrible was about to happen. But I had no idea what was in-store for me.

We arrived. Carlisle's determination was replaced by pain. I could only wonder why. And then he opened his mouth, and I felt a strange sensation on my neck. It took me a минута to realize that he was biting me. And then the burning came. I screamed, never knowing anything like it before. He bit me again, my wrists, my ankles. I screamed again......before Carlisle picked me up with inhuman speed and ran to his house. I wondered what I was becoming. but I knew, it was like him. Not human. I waited, waiting for the pain to stop.
Chapter 1
My pain numbed and withdrew, though I could still feel it buzzing. But a new sensation began, one that I could not describe. I looked in the mirror. I could not recognize who I was. A beautiful, pale face stared back at me, with bright red eyes. Carlisle told me that I was a vampire. I shook my head. Вампиры don’t exist, do they? I thought. He сказал(-а) that I was probably thirsty (So that was the sensation), and should hunt. I realised, with a shock, that he was right. I was a monster. He explained that there were other ways, and I could choose which way I wanted to go. He сказал(-а) that he hunted animals, they were his meals. I could choose to leave him and feed on humans instead, but they must not know that I was a vampire, unless I was going to kill them straight after. It was the same if I hunted animals.

I stayed with Carlisle, although it was hard at first to control my thirst. Every time I saw a human, I wanted their blood inside me. Eventually, I couldn't control it any longer, and went into the city one day. We had to leave later that day, Carlisle wasn't happy with me. We went our separate ways.

Later, I lived by myself, hunting across Asia and Europe. I couldn't stand being a monster, but there seemed to be no other way to survive. I thought that maybe if I don't kill innocent humans, I might be less of am monster. How stupid I was.

My life continued in this pattern for years. Killing, feeding, and killing again. It lasted for ages before I got sick of it.

But one day, I went out to feed, and caught the eye of one of the most beautiful Вампиры I had ever seen. It wasn't Любовь at first sight, but it was better than this mindless pattern of killing. Without thinking, I grabbed a human and killed him. I walked up to her slowly, ignoring his shrieks of pain and terror and offered him to her. She took him, graciously. Suddenly out of the darkness....

"Hello, my name is Edward Cullen"













Chapter 2
She was happy; I could see that in her thoughts. I wondered if she had a mate. I guessed she didn't, otherwise he would be here with her.
"Hello"
Oh that voice, I could listen to it forever and never get sick of it. Ты couldn't describe it. I immediately knew that I could stay with her forever. She moved, clutched me to her with intensity. "My name is Jane", she sad, before we moved in to kiss. We knew that we were made for each other. She broke away suddenly, and ran, leaving me with a pitched cry. "Goodbye, I'm so sorry". I heard her thoughts, but they were nothing to do with this. Somehow she knew that I could read minds, and clouded her thoughts by reciting Romeo and Juliet off by heart. I wondered what happened to make her run off like that.

The Далее night I hunted, she was there again. I was confused. Why is she back here again? She saw me and ran. My nights continued in much the same pattern. I hunted, saw her, and she ran. Finally I followed her. I was much faster than her, but she didn't know I was there. She ran, to a building with Italian Flags. It was only then that I realised that we were in Italy. She ran to a stone hall, and I followed her. As I came in, I saw 3 vampires, old, one with snowy white hair. He came and placed his hand on my shoulder, than moved away. I knew that he was Чтение his mind as I read his. His name was Aro. He wondered why I was here.
"My name is Edward Cullen", I said. He knew that, and I felt stupid then. "Jane, who are these people? What are we doing here?" I asked. She only hid her face and started thinking about lollipops to keep me out of her head. I turned to face Aro and snarled, instinctively moving into an offensive stance. He laughed. "Ah, dear Edward, we are not here to take away your Jane". I looked around and saw that many еще people were here than I first thought. There were about 20 to 25 Вампиры in the room. I was still snarling though, something in this room didn't feel right. He laughed, and сказал(-а) that I was free to go. "Jane will be out in a second." I felt two Вампиры grabbing me by the shoulders, and knew I had no choice. I was growling and snapping now, but knew it was no effect. As soon as they dumped me outside, I sank down to the floor, shattered. I wondered who they were, and what they were doing to Jane. But she came out, and I was amazed to see that she was alright.

In fact, everything was better after that. There was no еще running, and we hunted together, night after night. But when we were not hunting, she was back with those vampires. I wished I knew what they were. But I was happy with my Jane, was I not?

























Chapter 3
(Jane's POV)
I had just listened to one of Aro's lectures, about how we are not allowed to go with other Вампиры unless they want to Присоединиться the Volturi. I tuned out, and wondered where I would be hunting tonight. I thought I might try the prisons, apparently there were some really good ones out of Volterra (Aro won't allow hunting inside our city's walls!). Suddenly I heard Aro finishing, and I knew it was time to tune back in. He motioned to me to come up after. I did, and wondered if he knew that I wasn't listening. But instead he сказал(-а) to me "Jane, Ты look thirsty. Go out and hunt. Now. It's dusk already, so Ты won’t be seen. Just go and feed". I thought this odd, that he would say this to me, but thought nothing еще of it.

So I was at the prison, about to hunt, when I see a vampire, one that I've never seen before. He must be a newborn, I thought, and tensed myself, ready to attack. But he didn't come to attack me; instead he bit a human, and offered it to me. I accepted, happy at this turn of events. That face, it was one that I could look into forever, and never get tired. He spoke then, introducing himself to me. His name was Edward Cullen. I сказал(-а) that my name was Jane, and as soon as I сказал(-а) that, I saw him fall instantly in love. I came вперед then, ad kissed him, passionately. As I did that, somehow I realised that he could hear my thoughts. I kept them clouded, but for a brief секунда I thought of Aro, and then his lecture came rushing back to me. I quickly clouded my thoughts again, but broke away. As I ran, apologising for that, I could see him looking bewildered. But I focused all my attention on hiding my thoughts from him.

When I entered the Главная of the Volturi, someone’s hand brushed my back. I realised, too late, that it was Aro, and he was Чтение my mind. I then turned and saw the look of disapproval in his face. There was nowhere to run to, so I just ran to the other side of the room and bolted up the stony wall. Aro laughed, and сказал(-а) that he'll give it a few years, before he destroyed him. "NO!" I screamed, launching myself at him, as I started to fight. All that Aro did was just pull me off him, me still struggling in his arms, and before I remembered my gift, he called the guard to take me away.

When we were out of the room, I smiled at a member of the guard and laughed when he fell to the ground in agony. I did the same to the others, and before they could recover, hid myself in a corner so that they could not see me. They got up, shrugged, and went back inside the stony room. It was then that I saw Heidi, and anxious that she would tell Aro that I was back here, ran. I went back to the prison, and hunted. After my eyes were bright red, I saw him and ran, back to Aro. There was nowhere else I could go. If I ran away, the guard would come and "clean up" as they put it. But this time I wouldn't be part of the guard, I would be the "mess". So it was with a heavy сердце that I went back to Volterra. I didn't know that Edward was following me.

I went into the stone room, and Aro had his arm around me, again. He laughed at what I had been thinking, and dismissed me with a wave of his hand. I went to go and hang with the other vampires, but I suddenly picked up Edwards scent, and turned, clouding my thoughts from him, thinking this time of lollipops. I turned away from him and cowered, knowing what would happen, if not now, then in a few years time. But Aro didn't call on the guard; he just went and brushed his hand over Edwards shoulder. Edward went into an offensive stance, snarls erupting from deep inside him. But all Aro did was laugh, and сказал(-а) "Don't worry Edward, we are not here to take Jane from you" I saw, as he looked around, that he did not realise that there was a lot of Вампиры in this room. His eyes rested on me, and I turned away, ashamed at what I had done. "Why don't Ты leave, Jane will be out soon. I just need to have a word with her" I saw the pain in his eyes, as he was gripped by two members of the guard, and led away. They went, and returned in just a few seconds. Aro came over to me. "Nice work Jane" he complimented. "He will improve our, oh how shall I say it, service much". I wanted to fling myself at him again, fury overwhelming my common sense. I sank into a crouch. Aro laughed again "Oh there’s no need for that Jane. Why don't Ты go out and see him" I relaxed, knowing that I should, and went out of the room, exceedingly slow and dramatic. When I came out. I saw the relief in his eyes, but also the questioning. I resolved not to tell him anymore about the Volturi. It may have been stupid, but it was the only way I could think of to protect him.




Chapter 4
(Edwards POV)
Our meetings continued, we met, kissed, talked and ate. It was annoying about how she had to go and leave as soon as we had finished, and I didn’t even know who those crazy Вампиры were. This pattern continued for a very long time before I got sick of it. Even then, I just thought that maybe I was missing Carlisle. It never really ticked in my head that I had to know who those Вампиры were.

So we went to visit Carlisle. We travelled round the world before we finally found him. He was living in a small town called Ultapa in North America. He saw me, and welcomed me back like I was his son. Amazingly, he didn't mention anything abut mine and Jane's eyes, although I knew that he was curious and disgusted. One день Jane went hunting, but she thought I was behind her, just being silent. In reality, I was being restrained by Carlisle. She ran, and he held me back, then went away (with me on his back), to an old замок that was being restored. He put me in a room, and seeing the anguish on my face, would have cried had he could of when he shut the door and left me. I was shattered inside, wondering if Jane knew that I was gone, but she wouldn't have known where I was even if she realised. I thought of her, sitting alone somewhere, calling my name, and my сердце broke. I tried to get free of this room that he had put me in, but it was impossible. I called his name, angrily, then resentfully, and then growled and snarled. I needed Jane. I wanted to be back with her. No, I needed to be back with her.

After a few hours had passed, and I was no longer calling Carlisle's name или growling and snarling, или trying to rip the Стена apart, Carlisle came in. The look on his face when he came in, it almost ripped my сердце out. He сказал(-а) that he was sorry; then pulled up a стул and sat with his face in his hands. I went up to him, and put my hand on his shoulder. He looked up, and said, with sadness in his voice "Edward, what have Ты done to yourself. Your eyes are a bright red, Ты are with a girl from the Volturi, you've killed, what, how many people now? Edward, I would not have changed Ты if I thought that Ты were going to turn out like this. You've become a monster. I've Остаться в живых you. And I don't think..." his voice choked up at this movement. "I don't think that I'll ever find Ты again. I brought Ты here to tell Ты this. Jane would never let me say this."
I was stunned. He didn't seem to have noticed.
"Edward", he continued, "this girl." His voice broke off suddenly. "Remember how I told Ты when I changed Ты that humans could not know that Ты are a vampire. Well this girl is part of the reason. Have you", his voice broke off again. "Have Ты ever heard of the Volturi, Edward?" he asked. I shook my head numbly. "Well they are the reason, why humans can't know about us. They have taken on the duty of making sure everyone follows the rules. That translates to punishing transgressors. Edward..." his voice broke of yet again. "Edward, they are the worst of our kind. They are the monsters, not only ending humans lives, but Вампиры as well. I believe that they would make up rules just to torture people. This Jane..." Carlisle seemed to be struggling for the right word "This Jane,” he began again “her gift...Well the Volturi keep people for their gifts. Aro, who can see your thoughts, much like you, Edward, Marcus, who sees relationships, and Jane, who...” He started a new sentence "Well, just don't let her smile at you, okay?" His voice was filed with concern as he walked out the door, and left it open. I sat, wondering why Jane had not told me this earlier. I wondered why I shouldn't let her smile at me. I sat there, unable to come to a conclusion on each of them, and finally left, following Carlisle's scent, all the way back to the house.

When I was back, Jane came and threw her arms around me. She scolded me in her thoughts, but the expression on her face was relief, so I thought that it mustn’t have been too bad. Carlisle сказал(-а) that we should properly go back to Italy. I agreed, and that night we went back to Italy, back to the Volturi.










Chapter 5
(Carlisle’s POV)
My son came down to see me. Oh how joyful I was, at first thinking that he was going to try me way of life again. But he came with girl, a vampire from whom I knew from many years ago. Edward introduced her
“Hello, this is-“
“Jane,” I cut him off. “Nice to see Ты again” Edward looked mildly amazed. I guessed that Jane had either not told him about the Volturi, или that I used to be a part of it. Probably the former.
“Come in,” I said, breaking the awkward silence. Jane and Edward came and sat down.
“So Carlisle, I see that Ты are still a “vegetarian” How do Ты do it?” Jane asked
“Well, it’s quite easy really; all Ты need is to learn some self-control. Unlike this one here-“I nodded at Edward “he went on a killing spree in the city”
We laughed uncomfortably. The rest of the conversation continued like much like that, but before long, they had to hunt. I advised them to hunt outside of town, as we did not want to attract attention to ourselves. They started to take of, but I knew Jane would not look back, and as they started to leave, I held Edward back. He struggled against my arm, and I was tempted to let him go, but I resisted. I knew, even though my first instinct was to let him go, I had to make sure that he knew.
I flipped Edward onto my back and ran the opposite way. I knew that there was an abandoned замок now far away from here, but it was far enough that no one could hear him. He was calling for Jane now, with all the strength he could muster, while trying to get off my back.
“Jane, JANE!” he yelled. My сердце wrenched. I was usually the kind one. Usually I wouldn’t even take him away from his mate. But I had to make sure he knew the truth. He cried out again, and I would of cried myself if that was possible, with the amount of pain I was causing my son.

We arrived at the castle, and I put him in a stone room, in the middle of the замок that wouldn’t fall down. When I put him down he rammed into me, his eyes focused on the door, in essence, focused on the way to Jane. “Jane!” he cried out again, as he tried to get to get past me. His expression was sorrowful: the equivalent of the pain I was causing him was like the Spanish inquisition to a human: twice. I slipped out the room and shut the door just as he rammed into it, causing the whole building to shake. He cried out again: a tortured, pained cry, and this time a string of snarls and growls came as well. I sank down to the ground, ready to kill myself for what I had done to my son.

The growling and snarling finally stopped, and I let myself into the room. I would have been crying, but that wasn’t possible. I pulled up a стул and sat in the middle of the room, unable to look at Edward, both ashamed at what I had done, and my disgust for what he had become. After a few minutes, he came and put his hand on my shoulder in a comforting gesture. I spoke
“Edward, what have Ты done to yourself. Your eyes are a bright red, Ты are with a girl from the Volturi, you've killed, what, how many people now? Edward, I would not have changed Ты if I thought that Ты were going to turn out like this. You've become a monster. I've Остаться в живых you. And I don't think..." my voice broke off, hardly able to say the words coming, “I don't think that I'll ever find Ты again. I brought Ты here to tell Ты this. Jane would never let me say this”
I stopped looking at him then.
"Edward", I continued, "this girl." My voice broke off then, not sure whether I should tell him the words.
I plowed on. "Remember how I told Ты when I changed Ты that humans could not know that Ты are a vampire. Well this girl is part of the reason. Have you", my voice broke off again. "Have Ты ever heard of the Volturi, Edward?"

"Well, just don't let her smile at you, okay?" He stood rooted to the ground. I left, and left the door open. He could go back now. He knew.

He went back to Italy the following night
