Chapter 8
The highway was strangely quiet tonight.
On a typical Friday night Officer Ranald would see 20 cars every 5 минуты but since the early evening there hasn’t been one car except for a few semi-trucks. In his 25 years as an officer, this was a rare occurrence.
His patrol car sat parked in a shallow ditch in the darkness so that any driver going over the speed would never see him until it was too late. One of the many perks of being a highway patrol officer.
But tonight it was boring him to death.
With his window rolled down the outside air was cool and fresh making him feel еще relaxed than he should be.
His eye lids began to feel heavy as he started to nod off to sleep.
Just as he almost fell asleep his ears heard a distant rumbling noise behind him.
Finally, the 1st car tonight! He thought as he perked himself up to prepare for the possible speed demon.
The noise got closer…and louder.
It didn’t sound like a car или truck, еще like a motor bike of some kind.
A teenager on a joy ride probably.
He took out his speed gun. As the motorist came closer the speed dial started to climb.
45, 50, 68, 80, 95, 150
His eyes went wide from the speed.
No way that this is some kid on a motorcycle!
The speed climbed higher as he could see a dark figure in his rear view mirror.
The biker was not on the highway; he appeared to be riding in the field and was heading right for him.
And not slowing down.
“Sh—“he almost cursed out loud but before the biker rear ended him he somehow jumped right over his car.
He saw the rider landed hard on the ground in front of him about 10 feet away.
Trying to see what was in front of him he turned on his head lights. It was not a teenager but seemed to be a young man but he couldn’t make out his features.
The man didn’t Переместить but stayed straddled on his bike. As if waiting to see what the officer was going to do.
He couldn’t understand why this guy decided to take a flying leap over his car and stand parked in front of him.
What he couldn’t believe is how he leaped over his car. He should have needed at least a ramp of some kind to jump that high.
The man was still not making a Переместить so he took out his microphone.
“Son, I need Ты stay right where Ты are, I’m getting out.
Again, do not move.”
The man didn’t respond but he did as he was told. At least he figured that’s what he was doing since he hadn’t moved at all anyway.
Turning on his flashlight and cautiously stepping out, he kept his right hand on the gun in its кобура just in case this guy decided to do anything stupid.
“Alright, step off the bike and put your hands on your head.”
The rider got off his bike and slowly put his hands on his head as he was told but kept his eyes on the officer, like a predator waiting to pounce.
Now that he was closer to him he could somewhat see who the rider was but what he saw made jump back a few steps.
The man was tall, about 6’1, broad shouldered and his hands seem to be very large. He swore he thought he saw claws on his fingers but could have been just shadows. But what made him stop in his tracks was the man’s eyes…glowing red eyes like an animal...or a wolf.
“What the hell are you?” he demanded.
With no answer he took out his gun but as he did the man growled and leaped at him with bullet speed.
A painful scream filled desert night air.

I know the way it eats your mind
The way your brain, eaten up
The one that leaves Ты silent, blind
Long after you've had enough
I know the way it devours your thoughts
The way Ты feel confused
It feels like a million knots
It leaves Ты feeling used
I know the way it stabs your сердце
The way it leaves Ты here to bleed
It makes quite sure to tear Ты apart
The time Ты really need
I know the way it hurts your feelings
The way it leaves Ты blue
Ты say Ты see, when not really seeing
Ты say Ты know, but that's not true
I know the way Ты try and hide it
But then Ты know you'll always find it
In the trees and in the gravel
This lie Ты call friendship, I can't unravel.
