Because the chicken would have never crossed the road if there wasn't a thought in its head that didn't scream, 'IM GOING TO BE BLOODY MURDERED TOMORROW!!' So of course, he crossed the road with a CHOICE that he made so that instead of getting killed with a head chopped off, he's going to get hit by a car instead. At least in some respect his mother will be proud.
P.S. do NOT tell little children this story. it's not that they won't eat chicken ever again...it will be that they won't want to hear animal stoires that involved the ending 'to get to the other side' again.
