Ты should never change who Ты are, или what Ты like, или your personality because someone else doesn't like it, или looks down their nose at you... but sometimes it is important to know and to care about what others think of you.
For example... if Ты wear makeup, или buy clothes that make Ты look good; if Ты are polite and Ты smile when someone smiles at you, then Ты care about what they think and this is a good thing.
If everyone сказал(-а) that they didn't care what people thought of them, then the world would be in total chaos. Respect comes from caring about other's opinions and what people think of you, it isn't all about somebody judging you.
The people who don't care at all, are the people who end up in jail and on the streets, doing нож crime and disrespecting their elder's. the word 'care' itself implies that Ты are compassionate and loving. But as long as Ты know your priorities then Ты do care.
I am proud to say that care what people think of how i present myself, или how intelligent people think i am, или how polite i am.
I don't care about what people think if i skip down the улица, уличный или randomly lie in the middle of the park etc.
But there's a fine line between not caring and being uncaring.
